Whether you’re doing a household clean-up or major renovation, a dumpster rental is a perfect solution for your junk removal.
However, one question that impacts everyone’s dumpster rental decisions is: “How much does it cost to rent a dumpster?”
We’ve got the answers! Although there are many factors that impact the cost of a small, medium, or large dumpster, we’re here to walk you through the process and explain what impacts the cost.
How Much Does A Dumpster Rental Cost?
Dumpster rentals are a service that can come with either a flat rate or a variable rate, so it can be hard to budget properly for the final cost if you’re planning on renting a 40 yard dumpster.
A dumpster rental in Ottawa and surrounding areas can cost as little as $450 CAD or as much as $5,500 CAD.
The average cost of a residential dumpster rental is $800 CAD, while the average cost of a commercial dumpster is around $1,500 CAD.
Pricing can fluctuate quite a bit depending on the situation, and several factors will impact it. You have to take into account the bin size, the weight of the load, the rules of your particular municipality, and the type of trash you’re dumping.
What Impacts Dumpster Rental Prices?
Most yard dumpster rental companies will include certain charges into their flat rate price (which is usually based on which size dumpster you rent). These built-in charges can include drop off/pick up, landfill disposal fees, and administrative fees.
Additional fees may apply if:
- You have additional weight that exceeds the limit included with your dumpster size
- You need a longer rental period for your rental
- You try to throw out a prohibited item that the landfill doesn’t accept
- The dumpster is packed too tightly/heavily and has sunk into the ground, or the contents are stuck inside
Weight
Wondering what the difference is between a 10 yard bin and a 20 yard bin? Dumpster sizes are one of the main factors determining your rental costs. The heavier the bin, the higher the base price. It’s important to rent the right dumpster size for your project, as dumpsters are not meant to be filled past the wall height or otherwise overloaded. The ideal dumpster size will adequately contain all of your waste while still leaving some room for easy pickup.
Landfills will charge variable rates for disposal based on the weight of the waste, so it’s important to stay within these limits to avoid unexpected costs. Dumpster rental companies usually have a maximum weight associated with each bin size. Exceeding these limits might result in an additional cost.
If you’re disposing of particularly heavy materials, such as bricks, dirt, or concrete, you’ll likely only be able to fill the yard dumpster partially to ensure a safe pickup.
Type Of Trash
Certain types of waste, such as organic materials, electronics, and large appliances, require special handling and disposal, which can lead to an extra fee.
Common types of trash that are included in most dumpster rentals are:
- Household trash: Includes the disposal of furniture, appliances, household items, clothing, toys, etc.
- Yard waste: Includes leaves, grass, plants, tree cuttings, logs, dirt, rocks and landscaping tools.
- Construction materials: This includes drywall, flooring, tiles, roof shingles, bricks, concrete, asphalt, and lumber.
Prohibited items that you won’t be able to dispose of in a yard dumpster include:
- Hazardous waste, including industrial and biomedical waste
- Flammable items, including paint cans, car batteries, and propane tanks
- Liquid waste, including motor oil, gasoline, or other fuels
- Adhesives and resins
- Tires or scrap vehicles
Some companies do not allow you to mix the type of material you’re disposing of; it’s best to contact your rental company and ensure that your materials won’t incur an additional fee.
Municipal Rules
Where you live in the Ottawa region can also affect the yard dumpster cost. Different municipalities have specific regulations surrounding dumpster placement (either on private or public property), permits, and disposal fees. Understanding these rules beforehand can help you avoid potential fines or hidden fees.
Most companies should be well-versed in their region’s regulations, but it’s always good to check with your local municipality before committing to a dumpster rental period.
Ottawa
The City of Ottawa has no harsh rules for bin rentals on your property. The Trail Road Waste Facility only accepts non-hazardous waste generated within the geographic boundaries of the City of Ottawa
Certain items are prohibited from the landfill, including:
- Glass, metal, plastic, or cardboard packaging materials
- Liquid waste
- Household hazardous waste
Pembroke
Pembroke is part of the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre, which has many more rules and regulations which will really impact the cost of your Pembroke dumpster rental.
When it comes to acceptable items by Pembroke, materials must be placed in separate piles:
- Electronic waste
- Scrap metal
- Large items
When it comes to construction materials, yard waste, and garbage, tipping fees may apply.
